I did some research into what screen size I should be designing for. The most common two screen sizes are 1366 x 768 and 1024 x 768, and the vast majority of other screen sizes are bigger than 1024 x 768, so that's the size I'll be designing to.
Tablets
The most popular tablets are iPads, which have a screen size of 1536 x 2048 (The iPad mini is 768 x 1024). Other than iPads, Google Nexus's are 1600 x 2560, which is thinner and taller. I think the way to get round this problem would be to scale up the Ipad's screen size so that it's height was 2560, but then only put content on the centre 1600 pixels. That way the layout would work perfectly on the Google Nexus, and would fit inside the iPad with some space at the side.
Smartphones
It seems that the most common smartphone screen aspect ratio is 2:3, with a few being at 9:16 and a couple being at 3:5. The most common aspect ratio is the thinnest one used, which means that if I design to that width, the website will fit into the other screen sizes in the same way that the 1024 x 768 will fit inside the 1366 x 768 computer screens.
