OUGD504 - A Brief History Of... Website - Initial Design Choices

Colour

I started off with a white background, this seemed like the most sensible thing to do given that the food blogs I like best were the ones that had a bright white background. I then made the smaller column yellow to make it more pancake-related without it being too bright. All text, borders etc are done in brown rather than black to match with the crater-like parts of pancakes when they've been cooked.

Fonts

For the “logo” I used Birds of Paradise as the font because it’s got a nice balance between being scripty and easily readable.  I increased the height of it to 120% as this makes it look more delicate than it looked before. I also changed the tracking between the ‘n’ and ‘c’ to 25pt as they overlapped each other to much. It is used at 89pt on the website to fit the grid. Unfortunately it's not a web-safe font to my knowledge, which is an issue I'll have to address somehow, but when I was looking through Google Fonts, I couldn't find one I liked that was appropriate for it.

My body copy is a font called Railway, which I used because of it’s very round letters as well as using somewhat traditional shapes in the lettering. The body copy is 12pt Medium, the headings are 30pt SemiBold, and the subheadings are 21pt light. This is also used for dates. Railway is a Google Font, so is web-safe.

Grid

I somewhat based the grid on the Golden Ratio, It clearly is a two column grid, and this columns are dictated by the golden ratio. The height each post takes up on the screen is also dictated by the golden ratio, as is how the remaining space was split between being the banner or showing part of the previous post. Every gap between content is 30px wide as I feel this looked nice.
